It’s time to show up for trans & nonbinary people in many ways
One way is to help community members manage our heightened distress. Join me for a two hour webinar on supporting trans and nonbinary community members dealing with distress regarding the election outcome and the uncertain future ahead. I’m a psychologist and trans man with an active psychotherapy practice. I’ll draw from my expertise as a trans mental health researcher, my robust clinical experience, and my insights as a trans community member to provide strategies for showing up for the trans and nonbinary people who need you right now. My background (in other words: who is this guy and why should we listen to him?)
I'm a psychologist and trans man who has been researching and writing about trans mental health for over a decade. My work in the area has been recognized by multiple awards including the transgender research award from American Psychological Association Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity and the World Professional Association for Trans Health (WPATH). My work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals and I sit on the editorial boards for the journals Psychotherapy and the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. Additionally, I am a past scholar in residence at the international Faber-Llull Residency in the Catalonia region of Spain.
I present frequently on the topic of competent work with trans folks and receive consistently high feedback. Examples of trainings include invited talks at multiple Grand Rounds, Harvard Medical School CE conferences on trauma, young adults, and gender diversity (three different conferences), and a 5-day 15-hr course at the Cape Cod Institute last year. I also have multiple webinars and talks on YouTube sponsored by the Society for Counseling Psychology and from various conferences if you search for my name.
Clinically, I have over a decade of experience much of it working with trans people. I've had my own private practice for about four years and the majority of my case load is trans folks (though I see a diversity of folks for a diversity of reasons). The Society of Counseling Psychology awarded me the early career clinical practice award in 2023.
I've been focusing increasingly on sociopolitical distress over the past few years, largely out of necessity. I gave a talk on this with my colleague Dr. Em Matsuno a couple years ago which is available on YouTube but needs to be updated for this moment and with what I've learned in the meantime. I am currently working with my colleagues Dr. Jae Puckett and Dr. Bekah Estevez on a study examining best therapy practices for addressing sociopolitical distress among trans people. We are looking at this from both the client perspective and from skilled therapists.
